'Senseless' vandals smash Vietnam War memorial in Melbourne

Most of the commemorative tiles on the war memorial were smashed.

Vandals have trashed a memorial in Melbourne's west dedicated to hundreds of Australian soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.

The memorial in the Keven Wheelahan Gardens in Sunshine was opened in December 2017, and pays tribute to 521 Australians who lost their lives in the war.

Sunshine RSL branch president Garry Collins said the granite wall bearing the names of the soldiers had been struck with a hammer and commemorative tiles had been smashed.

"I'm quite shocked actually. I think it's sad," he said.

"I've been involved on the committee from the start to get this to where it is today.

"I could see all the hard work that's been put in by people and everyone's quite proud of the outcome except for something like this to happen."

The Sunshine RSL has been preparing to mark the Battle of Long Tan this weekend.

Mr Collins believed the vandalism happened within the last fortnight.

Brimbank Council condemned the actions, with Mayor Margaret Giudice calling the incident extremely disappointing.

"This senseless vandalism is disrespectful to their memory and to our community who rallied to support the creation of this memorial," she said.

"Public spaces such as this play a significant role reflecting and retelling stories that are important in our history and culture, so to see this sort of vandalism is an insult to our community."

Mr Collins said CCTV of the area had not been helpful in finding out who was responsible.

The incident has been reported to police and the council is working with the RSL and the local Vietnamese community to fix the damage.
