A senior Tory campaigner has been suspended by the party over allegations of sexual harassment.
Conservative HQ confirmed Robert Winfield had been suspended, pending an investigation.
It follows a string of allegations which emerged over the weekend on Twitter , which the Mirror understands concern Mr Winfield.
The claims include accusations that he behaved inappropriately towards younger, female Tory activists while acting as a party organiser in Leeds.
Asked if he wanted to respond to his suspension, Mr Winfield told the Mirror: “I don’t. Let’s see what happens.”
Mr Winfield is a longstanding member of the party, and has been Secretary, Treasurer and an Honorary Vice President of Leeds City Conservatives.
His profile on the local Conservative Party’s website references his “life-long interest in working with and mentoring younger Conservative activists.”
He was an Honorary Vice President of the Yorkshire branch of the party’s youth wing, Conservative Future, between 2009 and 2013.
A Conservative Party spokesperson said: “We take any allegations of this type incredibly seriously and are investigating this matter in line with our procedures.”
