Senior priest at Japan's famed Todaiji temple suspected of indecent assault

NARA -- The Nara prefectural police sent to prosecutors on Friday papers on a senior assistant to the chief priest of Todaiji temple in Nara, who is suspected of indecent assault, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned from investigative sources.

According to the sources, Shoshu Hiraoka, a 69-year-old senior assistant, allegedly touched the breast and other areas of a female university student working part time at a facility on the grounds of the temple in July.

The senior assistant role is a key post that comes before assuming the role of chief priest.

"I didn't force anything," the senior assistant was quoted by police as saying during questioning.

"We are surprised to hear about the news. We will decide how to handle the case after confirming the facts," Todaiji temple said in a statement on the incident to the media.
