Senior police officer being investigated for 'abusive and misogynistic' tweets

A police inspector is being probed for gross misconduct over a series of “abusive and misogynistic” tweets – including saying a Sarah Everard activist should have been “thrown in the sea at high tide”.

Inspector Phil Grimwade, of Nottinghamshire Police, may face a hearing and is on restricted duties after a complaint was made about more than 40 of his tweets over the last two years.

These include a reply to a 2021 tweet about policing of the Sarah Everard vigil at which Patsy Stevenson was bundled to the ground.

Mr Grimwade, 47, said of Ms Stevenson: “She’s from Southend. Should have thrown her in the sea at high tide.”

One of his tweets said a Sarah Everard activist should be "thrown in the sea" (PA)

In other tweets he calls her a “narcissist” and other women “batsh** crazy” and “thick as pig sh**”.

Ex-Met officer Alice Vinten, 41, who made the complaint against Mr Grimwade, said his tweets were “appalling”, adding: “It’s part and parcel of the rotten culture at the heart of policing that needs overhauling.”

The force confirmed its probe. Mr Grimwade was contacted for comment.
