Senior officer to be shared between West Dunbartonshire and Inverclyde Councils

A senior officer will be shared between West Dunbartonshire and Inverclyde councils to save over £22,000.

A service manager responsible for policy, performance, srategy and community planning will equally split their time across the two councils.

The employee works for West Dunbartonshire Council and will also do the currently vacant role at Inverclyde.

Councillors were split on the move at a full council meeting last week, with Labour rejecting the proposal. However, the SNP administration, whose motion was carried, said the decision could be revisted after six months.

Labour’s Lawrence O’Neill said: “Have we got the capability to say here’s a member of staff that needs to work elsewhere for 50 percent of the time? I’m uncomfortable saying lets go ahead.”

Officer Malcolm Bennie said: “This is a six-month arrangement. I will be as honest as anyone if it doesn’t work out.

“I’ve had discussions with the convenor of GMB and Unite and both had no objections to the proposal in principle.”

The council has been keen to collaborate with Inverclyde Council for some time and agreed in 2018 to share strategic management through the joint appointment of an officer for roads and transportation, as well as fleet, waste and grounds service.

The decision will save the council £22,340 between October and March.
