Senior leaders 'quit' super school Abertillery Learning Community amid job cuts controversy

Three senior teachers are understood to be leaving a super school as it makes staff cuts at all levels.

Abertillery Learning Community, which has 1,500 pupils aged three to 16, has already said there is an ongoing review of teaching across all its campuses which is likely to lead to staff cuts.

A “review and reduction in the number of senior leaders” and others has been made across the school, Blaenau Gwent Council said in a statement, but would not confirm or deny how many senior leaders are leaving.

At the same time a new head has been appointed, the salary for which was advertised at between £92,135 and £106,709. WalesOnline understands that three head teachers have previously left that role in around the last two years.

The news that senior leaders are leaving also comes after teaching assistants at the school were left “devastated” when they were told as many as 15 of the school’s 60 TA posts may go as part of budget cuts.

In a statement Blaenau Gwent Council said: “Abertillery Learning Community is undergoing a phased approach to reconfiguration which has been in train now for some time.

“As with all schools staff often move on to gain promotion, for professional development, or for other reasons which are relevant to them.

“The new headteacher will make the necessary teaching arrangements to ensure that the improvements seen this year continue to improve in the months and years ahead.

“As we said previously, the Learning Community is currently consulting over a review of teaching assistants. This follows a review and reduction in the number of senior leaders and similar work addressing business support staff, site management staff and support services.

“There is an ongoing review of teaching across all campuses to ensure that our pupils enjoy the very best teaching we can provide. The review is based on a national model and is likely to result in a reduction in the number of staff.

“This process has been adopted and successfully applied in many schools across Wales. No decisions have been taken at this point."

TEACHERS PROTEST ABOUT SCHOOL FUNDING OUTSIDE THE SENEDD

Mother Amanda Smith, whose daughter is in year one,  said parents are incredibly worried about the cuts and the effect it was going to have on their childrens' education.

Another parent of a child at the school, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s a shambles there. The whole community are talking about it.”

Abertillery Learning Community opened in 2016 bringing five different schools in the area together under one umbrella - the former Abertillery Comprehensive and Abertillery, Bryngwyn, Queen Street and Roseheyworth Millennium primary schools.

School leaders across Wales have been warning of cuts to staff as the budget crisis continues.
