Senior councillor leaves Ashfield Independent party

A senior figure at Ashfield District Council has left the ruling Ashfield Independents group by mutual consent.

Councillor Dave Hennigan was the Ashfield Independent councillor for the Central and New Cross ward, after being elected in 2019.

He will remain a councillor, and said he wanted to spend more time helping residents face to face.

He was responsible for corporate communications, governance, party and cross portfolio support, and also acted as the party’s spokesman.

However both Councillor Hennigan and the party have now agreed he will no longer be part of the party 'by mutual consent'.

The leader of the council, Jason Zadrozny, said: "He is still heavily involved in our party and is doing an excellent job chairing our COVID Recovery Panel."

He remains a councillor, and will now sit as an unaligned independent councillor.

He said: “I continue to work constructively with the Ashfield Independents but feel it’s more productive to work for residents independently.

"I’ve always worked hard to ensure that I put the residents in Central Sutton and New Cross first. That’s why working hard without party politics is so important.”
