Senior coach missing from the dugout as Bristol City head to West Brom

Bristol City are hopeful of a first win in 18 years at The Hawthorns on Saturday but amidst the action on the pitch there are changes going on behind the scenes.

On Friday it was confirmed that first team coach Paul Simpson had left the club, and there is doubt over the future of Keith Downing in BS3 too. Bristol Live understands that talks over Downing's future are in process and it is likely that the former Baggies coach will leave the club too.

Downing was not on the bench at the weekend for the trip to his former club, as an indication at how things may pan out.

Instead the Robins have called up professional development coach Alex Ball to assist the team, with the former City full-back running shooting and passing drills on the pitch before the match.

Nigel Pearson is expected to answer questions on his coaching set-up following the game, at the post-match press conference.

According to Bristol Live's sources, the two coaches who arrived to assist Dean Holden will receive six figure pay-offs as they leave BS3, should Downing's contractual talks be completed and an exit agreed.

Meanwhile Paul Simpson is now the favourite with some bookmakers for the vacant Carlisle managerial hotseat, with the former winger having played 36 times in the league for the Cumbrians, and being born there.

Simpson also became player-manager in his time at Brunton Park and he might be a good fit for the League Two side to replace former head coach Chris Beech, who was sacked following a poor start to season.

Beech was appointed in November 2019 and guided the club to 10th-place finish last season - and assistant boss Gavin Skelton and professional development phase coach Eric Kinder have taken temporary charge.

Team for WBA (5-3-2): Bentley; Tanner, Kalas, Atkinson, Baker, Dasilva; James, Massengo, Weimann; Wells, Martin (Subs: O'Leary, Scott, Pring, Bakinson, Simpson, Bell, O'Dowda
