Senior Bowl report: 5 Day 1 standouts who could be targeted by the Jags

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be spending the week in Mobile, Ala. scouting the Senior Bowl while getting up close and personal with some prospects who have entered April’s draft. The event’s first practice was held on Tuesday and there was plenty of coverage on Day 1’s session all over the web.

When considering all of the Jags’ needs heading into the 2020 season, here are some players who stood out that the Jags could eventually target:

Van Jefferson, WR, Florida

With the University of Florida being in close proximity to Jacksonville, Van Jefferson is a player many Jags fans are aware of. He had a solid day according to those in attendance, showcasing his footwork and ability to get open.

At 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, Jefferson could be a target for the Jags if they don’t go with a receiver Day 1 or Day 2 and elect to address their issues in the trenches. Most have him projected as a Day 3 pick and with Marqise Lee likely being a cap casualty, landing a receiver in April’s draft may be on the table and Jefferson could be an option.

KJ Hill, WR, Ohio State

KJ Hill was one of the most mentioned names Tuesday as he put on a show for those in attendance. His speed down the field was an issue for the defensive backs on the North team and that’s a trait the Jags obviously love when looking at their current group. Hill’s success shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone when considering how Ohio State receivers have fared at the Senior Bowl in the past like Terry McLaurin (2019).

Hill has some of the traits that current Jags receiver Dede Westbrook has. However, with Westbrook having an average season, struggling with drops, and ultimately being outplayed by Chris Conley, the Jags may look to bring a player with similar abilities this offseason.

Collin Johnson, WR, Texas

I know this is the third receiver to make the list, but they were just that good Day 1. However, that shouldn’t come as a surprise as we stressed that the receiver class is a strong one for the draft overall.

At 6-foot-5, 220-pounds, Colin Johnson is a massive target. He somewhat reminds me of former Jags receiver Allen Robinson. As seen above, he moved well out of his cuts throughout Day 1 and could provide Gardner Minshew II or Nick Foles with a can’t miss frame if selected by the Jags.

Javon Kinlaw, DL, South Carolina

Javon Kinlaw is one of the hottest names in Mobile right now and he didn’t disappoint on Day 1. He displayed the snap speed we mention in our preview of him as well as his ability to dip below defenders.

Kinlaw is a player who will probably be a top-15 pick at the rate he’s playing, so the Jags may have to trade up from their No. 20 selection if they want him. He clearly would be worth it as the Jags need to get younger in the interior of their defensive line.

Marlon Davidson, DT, Auburn

With the Jags having a thing for Southeastern Conference players, especially in the western conference, it’s hard to imagine them missing Marlon Davidson. According to those in attendance, he played all over the line Tuesday, ranging from nose tackle, to three-technique, to defensive end.

Davidson is a player who would thrive at the three-technique position in the Jags’ scheme. As seen above, he’s quick off the snap and has very active hands, something that his teammates on offense couldn’t really handle.

Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic

It goes without saying the Jags need big-time help at tight end. Luckily, there are several notables in Mobile right now, including one who played in their own state in Harrison Bryant.

Bryant showed his abilities as a move tight end Tuesday and his strait line speed was a problem for the defenders on his team. The Jags in all probability need to land a veteran tight end in free agency to be their No. 1, however, drafting one shouldn’t be off the table even if they do. That said, if Bryant is available on Day 3, they couldn’t go wrong by selecting him.
