Senegalese chef who slept rough in Glasgow opens his first restaurant

111 by Modou in Glasgow has opened its doors to diners after being transformed under new chef Modou Diagne.

Owner Nico Simeone, who previously ran the venue as 111 by Nico, has handed over the business to his former protege after being impressed by his work ethic.

Diagne, 26, originally from Senegal, arrived in Glasgow from Spain as an 18-year-old and initially slept rough in the city. He applied for a kitchen porter job with Simeone and trained under the chef behind the Six by Nico dining concept.

His first restaurant at 111 Cleveden Road in the west end has opened with a five course tasting menu that showcases his Diagne's skills.

The venue has been given a new look with beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray and shades of white, dark furnishings and fixtures, bright green spreading leaves and graffiti wall art in the corridors.

The 46-cover restaurant has opened with a reduced capacity of 28 and is open Tuesday to Saturday.
