Senegal under FIFA investigation for breach of World Cup rules ahead of clash with England

Senegal's FA are under investigation from FIFA ahead of their clash with England after breaking press conference protocol on Monday.

Ahead of each match at the World Cup, national teams are expected to attend the media centre in Qatar to answer questions from the press. According to FIFA, these press conferences should feature the country's manager and a player - often the captain.

However, ahead of Senegal's clash with Ecuador, which they won 2-1 thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly, the Lions of Teranga were only represented by their head coach Aliou Cisse. Although he spoke for 40 minutes, FIFA have not taken kindly to the break in tradition and have now opened proceedings against the African side.

The statement from football's governing body read: "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Senegalese Football Federation due to the potential breaches of article 44 of the Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, article 2.7.2 of the Media and Marketing Regulations and article 8.5.3 of the Team Handbook. The potential breaches relate to the mandatory press conference that took place on 28 November ahead of the Ecuador vs Senegal FIFA World Cup match."

It is expected that this investigation will not see Senegal kicked out of the tournament but they are more than likely to be fined for this breach. Germany were fined £8,800 on Tuesday for the same offence on Tuesday.

Of course, Senegal will face England in the Round of 16 after the Three Lions finished as Group B winners on Tuesday following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Wales in Al Rayyan. Marcus Rashford scored twice and Phil Foden also found his way onto the scoresheet as the Manchester-born forwards put on a show against Rob Page's side.
