February 14 marks the day, 13 years ago, that British resident Shaker Aamer was rendered unlawfully to the US prison at Guantánamo Bay. He faces no charge or trial and he was cleared for release in 2007 and again in 2009. David Cameron has informed President Obama that Shaker Aamer’s release and return to his family in the UK is a priority for the UK government and that it is a matter of great urgency. There are only a few weeks left for Prime Minister Cameron to achieve this before parliament is dissolved ahead of the general election in May. Valentine’s Day, would be a good day for news of Shaker’s release from his years of torture and abuse. He has a loving family who long for an end to the empty years of waiting for his return. If Shaker Aamer’s release is a priority for David Cameron, why is Shaker still in Guantánamo? How can we prepare to celebrate the legacy and values of Magna Carta, when Shaker Aamer’s human rights have been denied?

• Hadley Freeman’s excellent critique of 50 Shades (12 February) fails to mention how dated it all is. To keep tabs on her, Grey gives Anastasia a Blackberry. A Blackberry! It’s almost a costume drama.
