The Senate voted Tuesday to repeal President Trump's tariffs on Brazil, with five Republicans joining Democrats.
Why it matters: The vote serves as a symbolic rebuke of Trump's trade policies. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will not hold a vote on the measure (nor would Trump sign it into law).
- Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) led the legislation, and the final vote was 52 to 48.
- GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine.), Mitch McConnell (Ky), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.) voted yes along with all Democrats.
Zoom out: This is the third time Democrats have forced a vote on resolutions that would end Trump tariffs. It received the most GOP votes, so far.
- The Senate voted to repeal Trump's tariffs on Canada in April, with support from Murkowski, Collins, Paul and McConnell.
- But another April effort to end Trump's 10% across-the-board tariffs failed, with McConnell not voting.
