WASHINGTON _ The Senate late Wednesday authorized the Intelligence Committee to hand over documents relevant to the case of the United States v. Maria Butina.
Butina is the Russian national who has been indicted on charges of conspiracy and acting as a foreign agent without proper authorization.
Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard M. Burr of North Carolina and Vice Chairman Mark Warner of Virginia said in a statement that they requested the chamber adopt the resolution to authorize releasing the transcript of testimony from Butina to the Department of Justice and Butina's lawyer.
"In response to requests from the Department of Justice and counsel for Maria Butina, we have sought authorization from the Senate to release to both parties the transcript of Ms. Butina's testimony before the Committee," Burr and Warner said. "The Committee intends to provide the transcript, provided both parties agree to include it under the auspices of a protective order, which we understand is currently under discussion."
The Senate adopted the resolution by unanimous consent before finishing up legislative business before a shorter-than-usual August recess period.
