Senate candidate says children from rape 'a gift from God

A video from a year ago has been unearthed featuring Republican Senate candidate Darryl Glenn saying children who were born from rape are "a gift from God."

The video featured in the Colorado Springs Independent showed Glenn saying if a woman wants an abortion, "don't ask me to pay for it."

"That's a gift from God," he said. "There are no exceptions with that. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to pray for you."

The comments have shades of 2012 when Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who was running for Senate, said that if a woman is raped and it is "legitimate rape," then the body "has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

That same year, Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said "even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

Both Mourdock and Akin lost their races in 2012. Glenn's comments will not likely move the needle as he has long been short on campaign cash and trailed incumbent Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet in the polls.

Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call rates the race Safe Democrat.
