Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand calls on Trump to resign amid 'credible' sex assault allegations

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Monday urged President Donald Trump to step down over the "credible" and "numerous" allegations of sexual harassment against him, joining a fellow Democratic senator who made a similar plea on Sunday.

If Trump refuses to resign, Gillibrand told CNN that Congress should launch a sweeping investigation into the president, who stands accused of sexually harassing or assaulting nearly two dozen women.

"I've heard these women's testimony and many of them are heartbreaking," Gillibrand said. "Whether (Trump) will ever hold himself accountable is something you really can't hold your breath for so Congress should have hearings."

On Sunday, Gillibrand's Democratic colleague, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, similarly urged Trump to resign while campaigning for Doug Jones, the Democratic candidate fending off against accused child molester Roy Moore in Alabama's highly publicized Senate election.

"I just watched Sen. Al Franken do the honorable thing and resign from his office," Booker said during a Jones campaign event. "My question is, why isn't Donald Trump doing the same thing _who has more serious allegations against him, with more women who have come forward."

Franken, a Democratic senator from Minnesota, resigned last week after several women accused him of sexually harassing them.

Gillibrand said the recent avalanche of sexual harassment allegations against powerful men in politics, showbiz and media only adds to why Trump should step down or face a congressional probe.

"This is a very powerful moment in America's history and not only should women be heard but they should be believed," she said. "Just like you would investigate any other allegation of fraud, or any other crime committed, why do we not believe women, why do we not investigate their allegations?"
