Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman criticized Democrats' response to the immigration-related protests in Los Angeles, saying his party loses the "moral high ground" by failing to condemn violence.
"I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that. This is anarchy and true chaos," Fetterman said in a publication on X. "My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement," he added.

The publication received several supportive responses from Republican officials or sympathizers, including Elon Musk and Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Deputy White House chief of staff and Cabinet secretary Taylor Budowich said the situation unfolding in the city is a "wake up call for many Democrats," telling Fetterman "there is no room for you in the party of Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris."
"Their self-obsessed pursuits of power are blind to you and your concerns. They defend chaos, reject biology, and are unbothered by the invasion of our nation," she added. Republicans have reportedly considered the possibility of luring Fetterman to their party given his repeated criticism of Democrats, but the senator has not given indication of being open to switching sides.
Earlier this month, Fetterman criticized Democrats on issues ranging from immigration enforcement to the stance of some colleagues regarding Israel. Speaking at a forum along with Republican colleague Dave McCormick, the lawmaker claimed that bipartisanship "is getting more and more punitive." He went on to condemn the recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, when a man threw incendiary devices on a group calling for the return of the hostages kept by Hamas, claiming that some Democrats have "lost the argument" when it comes to Israel.
Fetterman went on to highlight common ground between him and Republicans, claiming that Democrats have made a "mistake" when it comes to immigration enforcement. "That's a mistake that our party made, and that's the border," said the senator, adding that he supports providing funds for building more parts of the border wall and new detention centers. "I absolutely support those kinds of investments to make our border secure as well," he said.
