Semple Stadium to host Munster hurling final between Limerick and Waterford

Sunday week’s Munster Limerick-Waterford Munster final has been fixed for Semple Stadium.

The Munster CCC also considered Pairc Ui Chaoimh, which has yet to host the showpiece event since its reopening in 2017, but ultimately plumped for Thurles, which was also the venue when the counties last met in the provincial decider in 2007 and has staged three of the previous five finals.

Limerick boss John Kiely said following last Sunday’s semi-final win over Tipperary at Pairc Ui Chaoimh that he had no preference for where the game was fixed as they bid to retain the title for the first time since 1981.

He commented: “I don’t mind. I enjoy both places. This is a fabulous stadium, fabulous stadium, and the pitch is in superb condition, a lovely solid surface.

“Obviously, if we could put in 10,000 or 20,000 it would be great.

“I didn’t actually notice it at all today, to be honest. We’re getting used to it, that’s the bottom line, we’re getting used to it.

“This is a fabulous facility, fabulous pitch, as is Thurles, so it doesn’t matter.”

Waterford are looking to become Munster champions for the first time in a decade and are well accustomed to Thurles, which hosted their semi-final win over Cork last Saturday.
