Semi-final spot at stake as Buriram face Muang Thong

Buriram's Jakson Coelho, left, in action against Chonburi in the League Cup.

Joint-winners Buriram United and SCG Muang Thong United will meet in the quarter-finals of the Toyota League Cup at I-Mobile Stadium today.

The bitter rivals reached the final last year but the Football Association of Thailand cancelled the showdown after the passing away of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Buriram and Muang Thong were then declared joint-champions.

Thai League 1 leaders Buriram are favourites in today's match, which kicks off at 6pm.

In their two meetings in the league this season, Buriram won 2-0 at home and were held 1-1 at SCG Stadium.

Several Muang Thong stars played for the national team in two friendlies last Thursday and Sunday and their coach Totchtawan Sripan said yesterday that four of them came back injured.

"We have four players -- Teerasil Dangda, Kawin Thamsatchanan, Peerapat Notechaiya and Tristan Do -- who were injured while playing for the national team," he said.

"We have to wait until the last minute to see whether they are fit for the match or not.

"Playing Buriram is always tough but we will try to do our best. If we can beat them, it will boost our players and motivate us to fight and retain the Thai League 1 title," he said.

Buriram manager Tatthep Pitakpoolsin said Naruebodin Weerawatnodom and Phansa Hemviboon, who played for the national team, needed late fitness tests.

However, other key players are fit, including Brazilian forwards Jakson "Jaja" Coelho and Diogo Luis Santo and Venezuela defender Andres Tunez.

The encounter will also be a battle between two of the Thai League 1's hottest strikers, Coelho and Muang Thong's Leandro Assumpcao.

Coelho has scored 28 goals in his first season in Thai League 1 while his Brazilian compatriot Assumpcao has netted 22 times.

Coelho was Buriram's hero in the previous round when the Thunder Castle beat Chonburi on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Coelho scored in regulation and also hit the winning penalty.

In today's other quarter-final matches, Ratchaburi Mitr Phol host Sukhothai, Thai League 2 side Air Force Central meet Police Tero, and Chiang Rai United take on Ubon UMT.
