Selwoods establish AFL family milestone

Joel Selwood's brought up a long list of milestones during his AFL career but the Geelong captain will cherish this latest one the most.

When the 33-year-old leads the Cats out against Port Adelaide on Thursday night, it be the 753rd AFL appearance by a member of the Selwood family.

The combined games tally for Joel, twin brothers Adam and Troy, as well as youngest sibling Scott, will pass the VFL/AFL mark set by the famous Daniher clan of Terry, Chris, Neale and Anthony.

Having played 321 times for the Cats, Joel is no stranger to the lead-up to a game being about him.

But this time he will get to share the spotlight and celebrate it with the people he cares about most.

"I don't really look upon these sort of times in the past because you're usually wrapped up in yourself but this is one that I've achieved with the brothers so I'm really proud to be able to do that," Joel said.

"It's one we want to give Mum and Dad (Maree and Bryce) as much credit as we can because we understand growing up it wasn't easy as what it looks.

"We were from Bendigo so it was a lot of car trips, a lot of sport, and we loved it, but Mum and Dad were fantastic."

Every parent of sports-loving children sacrifice a great deal, but the lengths Maree and Bryce went to, particularly in the early days, are extraordinary.

Adam and Troy were plucked out of their home town in regional Victorian in 2002 and drafted to West Coast and the Brisbane Lions, respectively.

Joel was picked up by the Cats four years later, before Scott joined Adam at the Eagles at the end of 2007.

Despite the Selwoods being separated across Australia, Maree and Bryce always managed to follow their sons' careers intently.

"It wasn't the easiest scenario Mum and Dad got dealt but we can be really grateful we all got drafted to three great clubs," Joel said.

"As we've gone throughout our career, we've wanted to make sure that they have enjoyed it too,

"We know it's not going to last forever and we appreciate everything they've done."
