Seller tricked by man with 'money envelope' filled with paper

A man was tricked in a street deal after he was handed an envelope of pieces of paper instead of money.

The victim had arranged to meet a man to sell an electric Sur-Ron bike - some of which are worth up to £4,500.

The pair met on Union Street, in Liverpool city centre, and the alleged buyer handed the seller an envelope of cash, at around 7.45pm on Tuesday, January 25.

The suspect then rode off on the bike but when the seller checked the envelope it was full of pieces of paper.

Police were called and launched an investigation into the incident.

He told officers at the scene the suspect had got the envelope filled with paper out of a blue Ford Fiesta, parked on Union Street.

Officers at the scene established the Fiesta was believed to have been stolen and it was seized.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police: "We were called at 7.45pm last night, Tuesday 25th January, following reports that a male had gone to Union Street in Liverpool for a pre-arranged meeting to sell an electric Sur-Ron bike to another man.

"He met the man who gave him an envelope of cash and then rode off on the bike. When the envelope was opened it was full of pieces of paper.

"An investigation is underway and CCTV enquiries have been carried out in the local area.

"Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 900 of 25 th January."
