Selfless students organise donation drive for lonely OAPs at Dundee hospital

Selfless University of Dundee medical students have been commended for arranging a donation of gifts and supplies to an elderly care ward at Ninewells Hospital.

Sherie George and Laura McKenna, who are 5th year medical students at the university, organised the donation drive for Ward 6 following a work placement.

The pair donated books, colouring books, games, juice and toiletries to the ward, funding and collecting the donations from staff and students from the university and local businesses.

Sherie said she wanted to do something to support patients on the ward, many of whom have not had visitors because of the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “I decided to organise the donation drive after my work placement on Ward 6.

"I wanted to give something to the patients to help pass the time during their hospital stay.

"Many patients didn’t have visitors during my placement due to restrictions in place because of COVID-19.

“I would like to thank all the staff and students at Ninewells for all the donations we have received so far.

"We are extremely grateful and overwhelmed by the kindness and support that has been shown to the patients on ward 6."

Among the donors are Ninewells Library, who donated a book trolley, Book Attic and Blackness Library for books, B.fresh Juices for providing drinks and charity the Daily Sparkle who provided discounted magazines.

Sherie added: “We hope these donations will put a smile on patients’ faces during their hospital stay and give them something to help pass the time.”

Sherie and Laura have been thanked by ward staff for the donation - and have been praised online for their selflessness.

Accepting the donation, senior charge nurse Fiona McCallum said: "Thank you so much for this generous donation, it is very much appreciated. It will keep our patients busy during their stay."

And posting on social media, one commenter said of the donation: "Thank you so much, an amazing thing to do for patients."
