Selfless Gateshead mum’s community work receives recognition from Boris Johnson

Thousands of selfless individuals across the nation are donating their time to help their communities through the coronavirus pandemic.

And Alisar Taylor is no different.

She has been hosting free video calls and zoom parties for children who are in hospital and have complex needs during lockdown.

Her hard work hasn't gone unnoticed and she was delighted to be recognised by Boris Johnson.

The Prime Minister selected Alisar as a Point of Light award winner - which recognises outstanding volunteers making a difference to their community.

Every day, the Prime Minister awards a volunteer a Point of Light award for their service during lockdown.

Recognised as the UK’s 1370th Point of Light honouree, Alisar is over the moon her volunteering has been recognised.

She said: "I am delighted to be recognised for this honour which I deeply accept on behalf of the wonderful children that I have been supporting throughout this difficult time.

"Helping the children to overcome their fears and protecting the mental health of these children has been paramount.

"This pandemic has isolated so many people and knowing that I have made a real difference to them means the absolute world to me.”

Alisar, founder of Dreams on Moonbeams, normally hosts private themed discos and parties.

But since lockdown, the 43-year-old, from Gateshead, is unable to continue with her normal work so has turned to technology to keep children's spirits high.

From personal video messages to zoom parties, Alisar has been helping children who are struggling to cope.

Alisar told ChronicleLive that her work was spotted by the Government through the ChronicleLive's acts of kindness campaign.

"Helping the children to overcome their fears and protecting the mental health of these children has been paramount.

"This pandemic has isolated so many people and knowing that I have made a real difference to them means the absolute world to me.”

Alisar will receive a personal letter from the Prime Minister thanking her for her work alongside a certificate, and an announcement on social media by Cabinet Office.

In a personal letter to Alisar, Mr Johnson said: “Being in hospital as a child can be daunting at any time, and only more so when the necessary restrictions to save lives from coronavirus mean family and friends can no longer visit freely.

"It is also difficult for children with special educational needs to understand the sacrifices we are all having to make.

“So I am lost in admiration for the way you have used your Dreams on Moonbeams business to create free virtual parties that are bringing some company, kindness and love into the lives of young people when they need it the most.

“With your magical characters, like Princess Rapunzel locked down in the tower with her long hair, you are brightening up some of the toughest days for children where you live.”
