'Selfish' fly-tipper fined after being caught dumping rubbish onto footpath

A ‘selfish’ fly-tipper has been fined almost £1,300 after being caught on camera emptying rubbish from a hired van onto a footpath in north Manchester.

Anastasios Kyriakides, 31, admitted to dumping what appeared to be rubble, wood and general waste on Dalton Street in Harpurhey on April 29, 2020.

Mobile phone footage captured by residents shows the waste being unloaded from the back of a white Mercedes Luton van leased to Kyriakides.

The incident, which took place at the entrance to the railway embankment off Dalton Street, was later investigated by Manchester council’s neighbourhood compliance team.

Kyriakides, of Vancouver Quay, Salford, pleaded guilty to the fly-tipping offence at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on August 17 after failing to attend a previous hearing.

He claimed that he had to dump the waste to clear the van before returning it to the hire company, and that the recycling centres were closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Kyriakides was fined £346 and ordered to pay costs of £872 and a £35 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £1,253.

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, deputy leader of Manchester council, thanked residents for getting the footage and securing a ‘foolproof case’ against the fly-tipper.

“No-one wants to see litter or waste on our streets but the downright cheek of using a hired van to dump rubbish in our city is just wrong,” said Coun Rahman.

“Our officers have shown their determination to investigate and catch selfish people like this who think it's okay to fly-tip in our city.

“We won't accept this from anyone and will take every step necessary to bring these people to justice."
