'Selfish' driver slammed after parking car on grave on Mother's Day

A driver has been slammed as 'selfish' after parking left their car on a grave on Mother's Day.

Selena Zafar, 40, was visiting her mother's grave at Southern Cemetery in Manchester on Sunday when she came across the black Kia.

It was left with two of its wheels on the grassy area of a grave at one end of the cemetery and just a matter of yards from a headstone, Manchester Evening News reports .

Selena was so incensed she took photos and has tweeted them in a complaint to Manchester City Council before what she describes as a 'mature' couple got in and drove away.

Town hall chiefs have now reminded people to park considerately at Southern and all of their cemeteries, especially at poignant times of year.

Selena said she was incensed, telling the Manchester Evening News: "There is no excuse for driving over let alone parking on a grave.

"There are plenty of spaces outside the cemetery and yesterday most people parked outside and walked in.

"It’s a busy time and it’s lovely that people are remembering their missing relatives.

"However people need to think about others.

"Would they like it if someone drove over/stopped on their loved ones grave? I don’t think so.

"I’m sad that in 2019 people can be this selfish and have zero respect not only for the dead but their living relatives.

"I was shocked to see that it was a mature couple who got in and drove away.

"So often younger generations are blamed for bad behaviour but these two were old enough to know better. I guess it’s just a sad reflection on today’s self obsessed society."

A spokesman for Manchester City Council said: "We would encourage all visitors to Manchester's Cemeteries to park with care and consideration to other people, and be respectful of all graves.

"This is especially important on days such as Mothering Sunday when there are a large number of visitors to the cemeteries."
