'Selfish' day-trippers from Tier 4 areas drove hundreds of miles for a New Year's Day walk - police are furious

Police have slammed 'selfish' day-trippers from Tier 4 areas who travelled hundreds of miles to visit Snowdonia for a New Year's Day walk.

Visitors from as far afield as Kent, Southampton and Solihull were caught breaching coronvirus lockdown rules at the beauty spot on January 1.

Wales has been in Tier 4 since December 19, with all but essential shops closed, and people being told to 'stay home' to save lives.

Earlier this week North Wales Police warned people this week to stay away from popular tourist spots such as Snowdonia, Cheshire Live reports.

But, visitors have ignored the pleas and North Wales Police posted on social media today that there have already been several breaches.

Officers from the force criticised the walkers, calling their behaviour 'unnecessary' and 'selfish.'

On Facebook, North Wales Police said: "Patrols continue across North Wales and we are also working closely with our Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri - Snowdonia National Park colleagues.

"Several have been reported for #COVID19 breaches already today - with some travelling here from as far as Southampton, Kent and Sollihull.

"Please do not travel for exercise."Think of your actions - if you get into difficulties you are risking our Mountain Rescue volunteers and emergency services with your unnecessary and selfish behaviour.

"We all need to work together and it's up to all of us to do the right thing."

Earlier this week, mountain rescuers and Snowdonia National Park Authority were urging drivers to stay away amid reports that people had been driving to some beauty spots to go for a winter walk.
