'Selfish' BMW driver slated for blocking pavement outside shops despite spaces being free just yards away

A ‘selfish’ motorist who mounted and blocked a pavement in a lively Bristol street has been slated for his actions.

A man driving a black BMW pulled onto the pavement in Sandy Park Road, in Brislington, on Monday, when several shoppers queuing to get into nearby shops for supplies amid the coronavirus lockdown.

He then hopped out of the car and rushed into a nearby shop, despite the availability of a parking space just a few yards away.

A nearby homeowner, who requested to remain anonymous, told Bristol Live: “I was walking along the pavement to the shops and the car just pulled up in front of me, mounted the pavement and squeezed between the parked cars and the bus stop.

“There was a parking spot right in front of him so I thought fair enough. But he just stopped right there on the pavement.

“He got out of the car, clearly oblivious to the five or so people watching him and went into a nearby shop.

“I was so surprised by the nonchalance I didn’t have time to challenge him.

“There were literally parking spots yards away but was clearly too much trouble for him.”

The witness, left dumbfounded by the motorist’s actions, believes the act belied the groundswell of community kindness amid the outbreak of covid-19, which has left the nation on lockdown and many people isolated.

“At a time when people are helping each other more than ever this stark selfishness really riled me,” the witness added.

“No buggy or wheelchair could have passed and the elderly would have a job too, risking falling into the road.

“But as long as he saved three seconds of his important day.”

Bristol is not short of inconsiderate drivers, be it those who fail to understand the rules of the road or just blatantly flout them.
