Self-proclaimed 'Queen of Houseplants' reveals the ridiculously easy way to tell if your plants need watering

Most people have a houseplant somewhere in their home.

Whether it's dangling off a shelf, thriving on the windowsill or slowly taking over a wall in your living room - a leafy green plant can give a plain room a much needed lift.

But for those of us who haven't been blessed with a green finger - brown crispy leaves and cracked soil are a common sight.

From abandoning them completely to accidentally drowning them when we finally remember they exist - there are several ways that we kill our plants.

But before you give up and switch to artificial - a houseplant enthusiast has recently uploaded a TikTok video that could solve all of your problems.

Reagan Kastner, the self-proclaimed 'Queen of Houseplants' recently revealed to her 244.2k following a top tip for testing to see if your houseplant needs to be watered - and it's super easy.

Talking to the camera, Reagan says: "I work with plants for a living.

"And I'm here to tell you that you have the magic powers to know when any type of plant needs to be watered.

"Get ready, here's your magical power - your finger.

"Stick your finger about this deep in any plant," she sticks her finger about an inch into the soil.

"If you take it out and you see dirt on it - don't water, don't do it! Over-watering kills plants.

"Now if you stick your finger in and it looks more like this - it's time."

She holds up her finger with only a small dusting of soil on it.

"If you get your plant completely bone dry - it might get sad but when you water it it will bounce back.

"If you over water it - it will not come back."

"Say it with me, 'under-watering is better than over-watering, under-watering is better than over-watering!'"

Her video was viewed more than 562.5k times and received 79.9k likes.

Underneath the short clip, Reagan's followers rushed to share their opinions.

In support of video, TikTok user @yoitsannab posted: "Say it again for the people in the back: UNDERWATERING IS BETTER THAN OVERWATERING!!! (coming from a chronic overwaterer)."

And the @rootandwell account added an extra tip, writing: "I use a chopstick so I don’t have to stick my finger in dirt all the time."
