'Self-isolating' to end for convicted drug offender who missed his sentencing twice

A Fishponds man who admitted drug offences missed his sentence last week as he was said to be "self-isolating".

And now a judge has asked for him to be arrested as he missed it again today. (October 15, 2020)

Armaan Safder, 26, of Abingdon Road, pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to supply Class A drugs cocaine and heroin and Class B drug cannabis on May 17, 2018.

He was due to be sentenced Wednesday last week, at Bristol Crown Court.

But his father sent a message saying his son was taken ill and was told to self-isolate for seven days.

As a result Judge Martin Picton adjourned the case for seven days.

Rodney Wilson, defending, said Safder was told to attend and provide evidence he had been self-isolating.

But though Safder's father promised a medical note, there was no further contact and Safder didn't show up at court.

The court heard Safder committed the offences while on licence from a previous offence - and was then allowed his bail.

Judge Michael Cullum, who was supposed to be sentencing Safder, said: "He should never be on bail in the first place.

"Not even close to bail in the first place."

Judge Cullum issued a bench warrant not backed for bail.
