Self-Isolate in style: This Michelin-winning Edinburgh restaurant has a new Social Distancing Menu

As we see tins of tomatoes and baked beans go flying off supermarket shelves, what about those of us who, though forced to self-isolate, still crave the finer things?

A fine dining restaurant in Edinburgh is launching a new Social Distancing Menu to appeal to customers self-isolating during the coronavirus pandemic.

Merienda in Stockbridge won a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand award in October for its Mediterranean-style small plates made using Scottish ingredients.

Now people who want Merienda’s casual fine dining experience without the risk of mingling with other diners can enjoy it at home thanks to their new menu.

Owner Campbell Mickel spoke to Edinburgh Live about his luxurious alternative to panic-brought penne for dinner again.

“Obviously people are a bit scared. The panic buying of toilet roll and pasta isn't going to do much for anybody’s diet.

“Restaurants are feeling it, it’s a difficult time. So we thought we’d offer restaurant standard classics at home.”

You will be able to order your food and wine online and it will be delivered to your door, dropped on the mat and your meal explained to you form a safe distance, instructions are included.

“The menu isn’t finalised yet but we’re going to have restaurant classics like beef bourguignon and chicken chasseur,” Campbell explained.

“It’s going to be good, healthy, hearty and more importantly tasty food. Just because you cant come out and eat great food in a restaurant it shouldn’t mean you can’t at home.”

Campbell, who also owns catering company Exec Chef Cuisine, says he aims to start production next Tuesday or Wednesday, and will be taking orders at least a day in advance, to make sure everything can be prepared fresh.

Dishes will arrive packaged for the oven or microwave and ready to be put in the fridge or freezer to be prepared at your convenience.

However Campbell made clear, this isn’t Deliveroo, the service is for people wanting to stock up, so you’ll have to order a few meals at a time – or have some friends round, providing they haven’t got symptoms of course.
