'Self interest' - Former Nottingham Forest star on how players will view the January transfer window

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder David Prutton joined yesterday's Garibaldi Red podcast to discuss a wide array of topics.

Among them was the January transfer window. Here's a look at what the Sky Sport presenter had to say on potential new signings. You can list to the full podcast here.

What should happen in the January window?

"Do we go down the road of shaking it up again? We saw so much over the summer but it hasn't garnered anything to write home about.

"Chris Hughton will very quickly have to get his head around who he can afford to lose and who he is unsure about.

"If you looked at Lyle Taylor on a free you would have said yes definitely. Get Lewis Grabban back up and running and he can score goals.

"On the one hand you could say it needs major surgery, but then you look at the injuries and wonder if something comes together in January.

"Sorry if that sounds pathetically positive. You never known what a fully fit squad can do with Chris in charge."

From experience, what will current players be thinking about transfers?

"There's not many footballers that don't have an element of self interest. Some are better at hiding it.

"You only want the best players in. If that generates competition then good.

"If you're welcoming someone who can get goals and lift training, confidence and energy is key.

"Also youngsters can create energy. They can bring an appreciative naivety to a situation.

"Sometimes you can have too many hardened pros who are angry about the league table.

"We aren't talking about who Forest need to keep. That makes you think because they have good players at this level.

"Given where Forest are that's telling. Maybe with good additions and the current group performing as they can then there's the makings of a side which can do better."
