Fifth SEISS grant deadline: Last day to claim up to £7,500 if you're self-employed

Self-employed workers have just hours left to apply for the fifth and final SEISS grant worth up to £7,500.

SEISS - known officially as the self-employed income support scheme - comes to an end today (September 30).

This means you have until 11.59pm tonight to apply for the support, if you’re eligible and your business has been affected by Covid.

Applications for the last SEISS grant opened on July 29 and you should've heard from HMRC if you're eligible.

If you think you may be entitled to the grant but you've yet to apply, we explain everything you need to know:

Who is eligible for SEISS 5?

The eligibility for SEISS five is the same as it was for the fourth grant.

To claim the last SEISS instalment, you must have:

  • Filed a 2019/20 tax return

  • Traded in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 tax years - and continue to trade beyond this

  • Seen your business profits impacted by the coronavirus crisis - and have evidence of this

  • Earned at least 50% of your total income from self-employment

  • Recorded average trading profits of £50,000 a year or less

How much is SEISS 5?

The fifth and final SEISS grant will cover the period from May 2021 to September 2021 - so five months - but it is only worth three months’ of trading profits.

If your turnover is down by 30% or more, your grant will be worked out at 80% of three months’ average trading profits, capped at £7,500.

Or if your turnover is down by less than 30%, your grant will be calculated at 30% of three months’ average trading profits, up to a maximum of £2,850.

In order to prove how much your business has been affected by Covid, you'll need to give turnover figures for the 2020/21 tax years, as well as previous tax years.

This is so HMRC can compare how much your turnover has decreased.

For most people, you'll need to provide turnover figures for the 2019/20 tax year, or for the 2018/19 tax year.

You don't need to give turnover figures if you began trading in the 2019/20 tax year.

How do I apply for SEISS 5?

You can apply for your fifth SEISS grant this online on the HMRC website. You will need:

  • A Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your Government Gateway user ID and password
  • UK bank details

Not heard from HMRC but think you're eligible for SEISS?

You can call HMRC on its helpline on 0800 024 1222 or speak to an advisor via its webchat.
