Self-employed to be paid 80 per cent of profits, up to £2,500 a month

Rishi Sunak has unveiled plans to help the self-employed, in "the next step in the economic fight" against the coronavirus pandemic.

In today's daily coronavirus briefing from the government, the Chancellor announced a new self-employed income support scheme.

Rishi Sunak said the support package for self-employed people would cover 80 per cent of average earnings, up to £2,500 per month to help them financially during the coronavirus crisis.

The scheme will be open for at least three months, but will 'be extended if necessary'.

Rishi Sunak was joined by deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries during today's daily briefing.
