54% of self-employed reported an average decline of 63,667 yen in revenue as of March due to the spread of the new coronavirus, according to a survey conducted March 19-27 by Smart Idea Inc., a Tokyo-based provider of a household account book app Quick Money Recorder, on its app users.
A total of 17% of the respondents, including those who were not self-employed, reported a decrease in income, with 23% of the part-timers and 12% of the employees and executives responding in the same manner.
The surveyor predicts that incomes of those in various occupations will be further affected by the declaration of a state of emergency.
Among those who answered their spending has increased due to the outbreak, 47% said their spending on food has increased, followed by 35% on daily necessities and 6% on pharmaceuticals. In particular, more than half of the respondents with children said they spent on food more than usual, indicating that the cost of food for children's lunch has been increasing due to school closures.
The survey covered 2,422 men and women in the age range of teenage to 70s.
