Selena Gomez opens up about 'toxic' first love

Selena Gomez has spoken out about the “toxic” nature of first love in a candid interview about her new single, “Lose You to Love Me.”.

Speaking on US radio programme, the Zach Sang Show, the 27-year-old explained that falling in love for the first time can alter your perception of reality and your rationale.

“You’re in a phase of life where you experience love for the first time, and I think that can just be just a little toxic,” she said.

“You have this codependency that you think is love, and then you have this addiction to the passion and the frustration with each other that you think, ‘Oh, that’s love,’ and I believed that for a long time.”

Gomez did not name any of her ex-boyfriends during the conversation.

The singer famously had an on-off relationship with Justin Bieber, who recently married model Hailey Baldwin, and fans suspect her new music is about him.

Elsewhere in the interview, Gomez went on to reflect on some of her past experiences in love and explained that she was “afraid” of falling in love again last year.

“But I never want to lose the sense of love that I imagine it to be,” the singer continued before revealing that she is currently single.

“I don’t want to get jaded or bitter from anything. I believe that it exists and I’m happy waiting for that for however long that takes because we’re gonna be like doing this forever. It’s just going to keep happening until we’re out.”
