Selena Gomez on questioning her sexuality: ‘I think everybody does, no matter who they are’

Selena Gomez has “absolutely” questioned her sexuality.

The 23-year-old says she was unfazed when tabloids questioned her sexuality over her friendship with the openly bisexual model Cara Delevingne last year.

Gomez told PrideSource she “loved” the speculation, particularly as it detracted from rumours about other aspects of her private life. Describing Delevingne, she told the magazine: “She’s incredible and very open and she just makes me open. She's so fun and she's just extremely adventurous, and sometimes I just want that in my life, so I didn't mind it. I loved it.”

Gomez, a former Disney child star, was raised as a Catholic in Texas and grew-up around her mother’s gay friends.

When asked if she had ever questioned her own sexuality, Gomez responded: “I think everybody does, no matter who they are. I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it's healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it's important to do that.”

A number of high profile women and men have described their sexuality as fluid instead of fixed in recent months, while a recent YouGov survey found more than half of young people do not identify as “100 per cent heterosexual”.

A number of models, actresses and singers have appeared in the LGBTQ activist and photographer iO Tillett Wright’s 'We are You: Self Evident Truths' project, which celebrates people who do not identify as completely heterosexual.

In a separate interview, Gomez talked about developing a “healthy” perspective on her sexuality despite the double standards faced by women in the music industry.

She told Refinery29: ”It's part of being an adult, and I'm still figuring out how to be one of those, too.”
