Seizure may have caused Brisbane teen to drown in Bali pool

The father of a Brisbane teenager who suffered a suspected epileptic seizure and drowned while holidaying in Bali says his family is devastated by the tragedy.

On Sunday, Kristen Mace hit her head and fell into the pool of a Seminyak villa where she was staying with friends.

The apprentice chef, who moved from Melbourne to Brisbane two years ago, would have celebrated her 20th birthday today.

Justin Mace said his daughter had a history of epilepsy that could be triggered by sunlight.

"[Kristen] was sitting out at the table having breakfast in the morning and her friend was inside having a shower," he told the ABC.

"She looked out the window [and] saw Kristen was half in the pool, half out the pool, face down — so she screamed and called for help.

"It would appear she's fallen and hit her head … we don't know how long she was like that for."

Mr Mace said onlookers worked for more than 45 minutes to resuscitate the teenager, but she could not be revived.

He said he was struggling to come to terms with the accident, just weeks after his wife Jodie Mace died from cancer.

"We're obviously devastated, but I think this happening now has certainly put us in a spin," Mr Mace said.

"Krissy was very unique, she was the life of the party [and] she had a fun slant on life — I'm really, really going to miss that."

Insurance concerns spark public outpouring

Mr Mace arrived in Bali on Tuesday afternoon.

He said his daughter's pre-existing medical condition had not been noted on her travel insurance.

"The insurance company is investigating it but it's highly unlikely that we'll get assistance from them, so we're prepared for that," he said.

Family friends organised a GoFundMe page to raise funds to repatriate Ms Mace's body.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to the family.
