Segway unveils futuristic egg-shaped vehicle that can travel at 24mph

From electric scooters to self-balancing rollerskates, Segway is known for its futuristic vehicles.

Now, the tech giant has unveiled a new product called the Segway S-Pod, which it describes as a ‘smart transporting pod’.

The pod looks much like an egg-shaped wheelchair, and is designed to be used in enclosed campuses, such as airports, shopping centres and theme parks.

It’s operated via a navigation panel and is self-balancing with an adaptive centre-of-gravity.

Segway explained: “With an adaptive centre-of-gravity automatic control system, passengers can easily adjust the speed - up to 24 mph - by handling the knob to change the centre of gravity in the pod.

“The S-Pod spins and rotates by the centre smoothly for directional changes. The rider does not need to physically lean forward and back to accelerate or slow down.”

While you might be worried about the S-Pod tipping over, Segway has cleverly placed the brake by the shift of the centre of gravity, eliminating this possibility.

If the S-Pod looks familiar to you, it may be because Segway drew inspiration from a classic sci-fi vehicle - the Gyrosphere from Jurassic World!

Unfortunately, it remains unclear when the S-Pod will launch or how much it will cost.

Segway will display the futuristic vehicle at CES in Las Vegas next week.
