Sefton’s Covid cases down as fight against virus continues

Sefton recorded another welcome fall in Covid-19 infections, as new cases dipped below the 800 mark for the week.

In the week up to February 8, there were 759 cases in the borough at a rate of 275 per 100,000, down from 867 cases at 314 per 100,000 a week ago.

The fall builds on progress made in recent weeks since Sefton’s rate peaked at 1,116 on January 8, with over 3,000 active cases registered at the time.

In figures broken down to a much finer level, which cover the week up to February 4, Sefton had the Liverpool City Region’s most and least affected neighbourhoods.

Southport Waterfront was the city region’s worst hit area, with an infection rate of 851 per 100,000, an increase of 54% from 553 in the previous week.

On the other hand, Formby South and Ince Blundell was the least impacted of the region’s neighbourhoods.

It was listed as having “suppressed” the virus, meaning there were two or fewer confirmed cases.

Looking at figures for the rest of the city region on a borough-wide level, St Helens is the most infected.

In the week up to February 8, the borough had an infection rate of 346 per 100,000, down from 413 last week.

Knowsley is the next worst hit, with a rate of 332, that is also a fall from 454 in the previous seven-day period.

In Halton, a declining infection rate was also registered, the figure was down from 379 to 263.

Liverpool recorded a fall from 312 to 261, while Wirral continued to have the lowest infection rate in the city region.

The borough recorded just 189 cases per 100,000 residents, down from 259 last week.
