Sefton's coronavirus cases shoot up as extra measures likely

Coronavirus cases have continued to climb in Sefton this week as the borough caught up with some of the worst affected areas in our region.

Sefton had looked to be in a far better position than most in our region even a few weeks ago, but its coronavirus rate has now passed Halton, St Helen’s and Wirral, with just under 400 cases per 100,000 people.

The borough recorded 1,098 cases in the seven days up to October 6 and now stands behind only Liverpool and Knowsley in terms of case rates.

Outbreaks continue to affect education across the borough. Chesterfield High School in Crosby now has 500 children isolating at home due to the virus, with headteacher Kevin Sexton saying pupils and staff are being put under increasing stress over the issue.

In Bootle, beauty salon Skin Kerr was allowed to reopen after being issued a Closure Notice by the council last week for flouting Covid-19 regulations.

Officers said safety measures had been put in place at the premises and Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services said it would be shut down again if it removed them.

“It is the responsibility of businesses across Sefton to ensure they have the required measures in place to protect their staff and their customers from COVID_19 infection and we know that most of them are doing their utmost to comply.

“And, the Council is working closely with the Health and Safety Executive to provide support and advice to our local businesses.

“However, when businesses refuse to comply and insist on putting people at risk from the pandemic, we will not hesitate to take action against them as we have with Skin Kerr in Bootle.”
