Sefton Park 'booming' as fears lockdown rules 'forgotten'

With the Merseyside region basking in the hottest day of the year so far, pictures from Sefton Park revealed that - for many - the lockdown appears to be over.

There was little sign of people observing the two-metre rule for those outside their own household, as groups gathered on the grass, or walked around with several others.

On social media, the park was described as being "chocker."

Another user, @migzy0151, tweeted: "Sefton park is booming mate, lockdown who?"

Sarah Van Parys tweeted: "Went for a quick walk around Sefton park and there's absolutely loads of big groups of people sitting around. What is going on Liverpool?"

While Francesca Manca tweeted: "People have to get a grip."

But Ashleigh Quayle tweeted: "Sefton Park was busy but everyone distanced."

On the park's 148th birthday, many people also shared how important the green space had been to them during lockdown.

Liverpool St Michael's Community Support Network tweeted: "Happy birthday Sefton Park! You have been a lifeline."

The scenes were replicated elsewhere in the region, with roads gridlocked and traffic at a standstill as hundreds made their way to Formby.

New Brighton in Wirral was also reported to be far busier than usual, with people parking on pavements.

Under the easing of lockdown restrictions, people can exercise more than once a day, sit in parks or beaches or go for a drive.

You can also meet up with someone from another household in the park, as long as you remain 2m apart from each other.

But the majority of the coronavirus measures imposed on March 23 still apply, with the Government warning it was not the time to end lockdown completely.
