Sefton now has highest coronavirus infection rate in Merseyside

Official testing figures suggest Sefton has the highest coronavirus rate in Merseyside.

Between July 6 and July 12, 18 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the borough at a rate of 6.5 people per 100,000.

That is above Liverpool's rate of 4.2 per 100,000.

It is also above the Liverpool City Region's average of 4.1 per 100,000, which is down from 6.1 in the previous week, and far beyond the rates for Halton, Knowsley, Wirral and St Helens.

Sefton's infection rate was lower in the last two weeks, with the same 4.7 in the weeks ending June 28 and July 5.

Despite its rise to 6.5, though, Sefton's rate is still far below areas such as Leicester at 101.4 and Blackburn with Darwen at 47.0.

According to the app developed by King's College London and health science firm ZOE, St Helens has the region's highest new infection rate.

But this is not based on official figures, and instead gives an indication of how many people could have the virus at present based on a symptom study.

Figures from Public Health England (PHE) show a downturn in the number of cases across the Liverpool City Region as a whole, which should come as a relief to local public health officials, after they moved to stamp out a rise in coronavirus infections in south Liverpool and Halewood last week, deploying mobile testing units to the area.
