Sefton councillors could vote to give themselves a pay rise

Sefton councillors could soon vote to give themselves a pay rise.

Elected members of the local authority do not get a salary, but receive an allowance for their work in the local community.

In Sefton, this allowance currently stands at £9,150.71 per year.

There are also “special responsibility allowances” for councillors who take on cabinet positions and other roles that involve more work, and travel allowances, child care allowances and carers allowances available to councillors who need them.

The vast majority of councillors also have full time jobs, with their allowances supplementing other wages.

In the coming weeks, elected members' allowances could rise by as much as 2.5% - bringing the basic councillors' allowance to more than £9379 per year.

Councillors in other parts of Merseyside are paid the following amounts per year, respectively: Liverpool, £10,283; Wirral , £8,712; St Helens, £7,935; Knowsley , £9,478; Halton, £8,597.

Each 1% increase in Members' Allowances over the current rate would result in an additional cost to £7929.50 for cash-strapped Sefton Council .

The local authority will discuss whether an increase should be recommended, at its Independent Remuneration meeting on Thursday.
