Sefton Council has appointed a new chief executive - and everyone is making the same joke

Sefton Council has formally approved the appointment of its new Chief Executive - and many residents are poking fun at the announcement.

The appointment, confirmed during last night’s Full Council meeting at Southport Town Hall, followed a rigorous selection process.

Dwayne Johnson, who is currently Director of Social Care and Health at Sefton and has been in post since 2014, will replace Margaret Carney when she retires on May 31 after 10 years at the helm.

But as Mr Johnson shares his name with a certain professional wrestler and actor, everyone is making the same joke.

Daniel Hayes said: "FINALLY the Rock has come back to Bootle..."

Daniel Russell said: "If he doesn't have the email address as 'therock@seftoncouncil.co.uk' as his work email then I don't see the point in being the Chief Exec.

"And I hope in his first speech he declares himself 'the most electrifying act in sports entertainment' and then delivers a rock bottom to my council tax bill and will personally deliver a people's elbow to empty shops on our high streets."

Kyle Williams asked: "Will your first act of business be to 'bring it'?"

Ross Adams asked: "Who's the new mayor? Rowdy Roddy Piper?"

And a number of people made gags around The Rock's famous catchphrase.

Ian Cleary asked: "Can you smell what he is cooking?"

Wil J Reed said: "I wonder what he will cook up for us to smell."

Following confirmation of his appointment, Dwayne said: “I’m very proud and honoured to be appointed to the position of Chief Executive in Sefton.

"Having worked here for the last five years, I can see how much Sefton has to offer in supporting existing and attracting new businesses into our area, how engaged our communities are in what we are trying to deliver, and we have such a talented workforce to match.

"I am really looking forward to working with the leader and elected members on delivering the vision of this wonderful borough and so looking forward to starting the role in June.”
