Sefton coronavirus cases continue to rise but it's affecting areas differently

Coronavirus cases continue to climb in Sefton this week with the borough overtaking Wirral, Halton and St Helens in terms of infection rate.

Sefton had looked to be in a far better position than most of our region even a few weeks ago - but its coronavirus rate has now shot up to 479 per 100,000.

The borough recorded 1,324 new cases in the seven days up to October 10 and now stands behind only Liverpool and Knowsley in terms of case rates.

Southport MP Damien Moore has called for the town he represents to be exempt from the toughest restrictions.

He says while the infection rate in Southport is “worrying”, it is not as bad as the rest of Merseyside.

Figures show Southport has around 242 cases per 100,000 people.

Sefton’s worst affected area is Waterloo – with a staggering 906.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This week the council announced Remembrance Day services in the borough will be cancelled due to the new stricter Covid safety restrictions.

The local authority will pay tribute to members of the Armed Forces past and present on Sunday, November 8, via its social media channels.

Wreaths will be laid at war memorials across the borough by representatives from Sefton Council, including the Mayor of Sefton, the leader of the council, cabinet members and Sefton’s chief executive.

People from across the borough and beyond can watch online from 10.58am on Remembrance Sunday. A minute’s silence will then follow.
