THE Fred Hollows Foundation is asking parents, teachers and community members to nominate a year six student who has made a difference in the lives of others.
Nominations close at 11.59pm on September 11 for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award, which recognises year six students who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others. The foundation will select one junior ambassador from each state and territory.
Foundation founding director Gabi Hollows, who spent part of her childhood in the Hunter, said 2020 had underscored the importance of these values.
"Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other," Mrs Hollows said.
"He would be so proud to know the Fred Hollows Humanity Award is recognising students who are demonstrating this belief in their own lives.
"To see students honouring these words by showing compassion, kindness and integrity during such a challenging year is incredibly inspiring.
"I urge people to nominate a year six student for the humanity award and together we can continue to help spread compassion and kindness during this trying time."
All nominees will receive a certificate and be recognised at a virtual presentation ceremony later in the year.
The award charity partner Specsavers will give the NSW junior ambassador $5000 to put towards one of the foundation's programs to end avoidable blindness.
The award has recognised more than 1500 students since 2012. The Newcastle Herald reported in May that Mr Hollows' daughter, Anna-Louise, is carrying on the family's healthcare legacy and is an intensive care unit nurse at John Hunter Hospital.
