Seeking a cash cushion: refugee designer launches crowdfunding campaign to save the In Casa By Paboy brand

Cushions in the brand’s collaboration with the textile designers at Block Shop start from £120

It's been two years since designer Paboy Bojang first took Instagram by storm with his eye-catching cushions, and now the Napoli-based Gambian refugee has launched a crowdfunding campaign to save the In Casa By Paboy brand.

Although the last year has seen Paboy's bright, patterned cushions stocked at the likes of Paul Smith, The Conran Shop and Selfridges, the designer says that while the brand sells enough cushions to cover its overheads it has struggled to make investments in "crucial things that make a business a business”.

Citing huge challenges navigating Italy's expensive and complicated bureaucracy "that even Italians find hard", Paboy is calling for investment in the future of the business as a profit-sharing social enterprise.

His eventual aim is to distribute profits to co-workers and fellow migrant artists. The founder's "proudest achievement" to date is the employment and ongoing support of migrants Blessed and Ibra.

Marketing, a production and business manager and an accountant are the next dream hires for the brand so, as part of the Save In Casa by Paboy campaign, Paboy is asking for one-off donations, regular contributions, investment or pro-bono expertise.

A classic capsule collection is due to launch on Tuesday 3 May. Head to In Casa by Paboy for more information.
