'See you soon' - Jurgen Klopp sends Liverpool Champions League message to Robert Lewandowksi during Golden Shoe ceremony

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been awarded the European Golden Shoe for his 41 goals in the 20/21 season.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday afternoon and his former boss Jurgen Klopp sent in a video message to congratulate the Poland striker.

Klopp worked with Lewandowski while manager of Borussia Dortmund and has previously described the 33-year-old as the 'greatest player' he's ever managed.

The Liverpool boss reportedly said: "Hello Lewy, congratulations on the Golden Boot. When I heard that you had won the Golden Boot, I thought: 'How? Only now?' You can see how long it takes to get to the very top. But you've been at the top for a long time and you deserve this award.

"I'm really happy for you. The way you started this season, I wouldn't be surprised if you win the Golden boot again.

"As long as we don't play against each other, you can score as many goals as you want.

"I've said it a couple of times now, I'll say it one last time: I'm proud of you too. All the best and see you hopefully soon in the Champions League final."

The Reds last met Bayern Munich in the Champions League back in 2019 in the round of 16.

After a 0-0 draw at Anfield, Klopp's side cruised past their opponents 3-1 at the Allianz Arena as they went on to lift the title at the end of the season.

Lewandowski has already scored seven Bundesliga goals in five appearances this season and two goals in their opening Champions League group stage match against Barcelona last week.

The Golden Shoe was won by Lazio's Ciro Immobile in 2020 as Lionel Messi received the award the year before.

The only Liverpool players to ever receive the award is Luis Suarez, who was a joint winner alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in 2014 and Ian Rush also received the honours back in 1984.
