See what it's like to drive on new Silverlink A19 underpass after completion of roadwork

Scores of drivers are breathing a sigh of relief after the new Silverlink triple-decker roundabout officially opened to traffic.

The Highways England project started at the A19 and A1058 Coast Road junction, in North Tyneside , in summer 2016.

Now work to create an underpass beneath the roundabout is complete and people were able to drive on the new road from 6am on Monday.

If you have been avoiding the A19 junction for the past two-and-a-half years or haven't had a chance to drive along the new underpass, watch the video above to see exactly what it looks like.

Hundreds of people have already tested the new road and many took to social media to comment on it.

Michael Fowler said on Twitter: "After more years than I can remember I drove under the Silverlink roundabout without stopping southbound today. Absolutely amazing."

Jess Johnson wrote: "Omg the north bound exit of the Tyne Tunnel is pretty much done and there was zero traffic towards The Silverlink this morning. This is the first morning since July I haven’t been stuck in slow moving traffic."

Moseley added: "Silverlink being pretty much done is better than any Christmas present I’ve gotten."

And Bethany Tweeted this, with a 'drooling face' emoji: "The sheer joy I’ve just encountered being able to drive under the Silverlink roundabout at 50mph."

Contractors removed 80,000 cubic metres of soil to develop the underpass, which now allows drivers on the A19 to go straight through towards the Tyne Tunnel , instead of negotiating the busy roundabout.

Tynemouth MP Sir Alan Campbell says he is delighted the new road has opened.

He added: "This is a huge improvement to the transport infrastructure in our area. We had been lobbying for it for some time.

"It's the first triple-decker roundabout in the north, which is great for North Tyneside. But south east Northumberland, the Cobalt and that whole area are hugely important to the regional economy, and the roundabout plays a crucial part in keeping traffic flowing.

"There's obviously still some work left to do around it but it's praise to the hard work of the people who have built it as planned. It's great to see that it has been delivered more or less on time.

"Also praise to the patience of my constituents who have experienced delays, lane restrictions and closures during the duration of the work."

Around 35,000 vehicles are expected to use the new road. The average speed cameras will be taken away from the site once the final work is complete.
