See the shocking aftermath after crane fire and explosions in Northumberland

Shattered windows, collapsed roof tiles and debris strewn across the grass.

This was the shocking scene in Rothbury, Northumberland, after a crane fire and several explosions brought a community to a standstill.

Smoke billowed across the town's sky on Tuesday morning, and residents from eight properties were evacuated as a precaution.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene on Town Foot at around 7.30am, and nobody was injured in the fire.

Pictures show the damage caused by the blaze, with locals believing tyres were sent flying from the vehicle in a succession of explosions.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed the force is not treating the fire as suspicious, and believe it was caused by a vehicle defect.

Neighbourhood inspector John Swan said: "We understand residents may have concerns about this incident but we are not treating the fire as suspicious.

“A team will remain in the area to make sure the scene is secure and motorists keep to the diversions. If you have any concerns please come and speak to us."

The B6341 is closed and is expected to remain that way for some time. Diversions are in place, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Northumberland County Councillor Steven Bridgett took the pictures and helped assist residents at the scene.

He said: "Nobody knew what it was at first.

"The first I was aware of it was the explosions, there was three or four and that was the wheels blowing off the vehicle.

"There's damage to some of the properties along Armstrong Cottages. It has blown a number of windows out.

"One of the big wheels has come through a wall. The crane has actually sunk into the road.

"Everyone is fine, a little bit jittery as there are a lot of elderly residents there."
